When I use File-print from a document, the printer spits out blank pages. On a simple government form (1040 tax) for instance, it will print the form but not the information I entered on the form.
I am using a new HP Elitebook.
if I try to use the smart app, it doesn’t recognize all of the files.
Any ideas to help would be appreciated. I was hoping HP to HP would makes things easier. I must be missing something simple!

Welcome to the HP Community.
The printer - not even the printer software - can control whether certain forms can be printed with the form information.
The following solutions assume you have installed the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software.
In addition, optionally, install HP Smart Windows.
==================================================================
The author of the form - in this case the government entity that provides the form and the format used to complete and then print the form - controls the output.
This level of security is meant to keep you safe.
In general, the security placed on a file (like a completed Tax file, or perhaps an insurance form) is not something you can control on your side. That means: If the PDF form includes security that prevents printing the full content, you cannot override that security when printing the PDF form on your printer.
Try / Consider
NOTE: This method will likely NOT work if you cannot download / save the completed form file.
PDF - Print as Image
Reinstall / Update your PDF Reader (Adobe Reader DC /Optional Foxit Reader)
- HINT: Watch out for and UNCHECK unwanted extra software
- Adobe Reader DC software should be installed even if you do not open / view / print PDF files directly from the software.
Adobe Acrobat Reader Learn & Support
If the file will not print due to unusual content (odd fonts, color schemes, tables, other oddities), print the file as an Image.
Image printing does not require the printer software to translate file content.
- Open the offending document in Adobe Reader DC
- Click Print icon > Set other options on the menu > Click Advanced button
- Set the printer select the colors (Optional)
- Select Print the PDF file as an image

No joy?
What if?
What if you don't care about being kept safe by whomever is providing the form?
One option, unless the form is even protected to the extent that you cannot capture an image:
View the completed form on the website providing the form,
Create a Snip of the information on the page > save the snipped image as a .jpg file > print that file.
Snip – available since Vista! Check out the “delay” feature in Windows 10
