Accidentally placed blue ink in black ink tank on Smart Tank 6001  Can the tank be removed and cleaned out or replaced?  Not certain what to do now.  Had just begun setting printer up for first time when error occurred.

Hi @Steveimage,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

For your HP Smart Tank 6001 printer, if you accidentally placed blue ink in the black ink tank, here’s what you can do.

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it to avoid any electrical issues or ink leaks.
  2. Remove the ink tank by opening the ink tank access area and carefully pulling out the ink tank that was incorrectly filled.
  3. Clean the ink tank:
    • If the blue ink has not fully dried inside, you can clean it. Use a soft, lint-free cloth or paper towel dampened with water to wipe the ink tank. Avoid using any harsh cleaners or solvents.
    • Be gentle and avoid pressing the cloth into the printhead or internal parts of the tank.
  4. Empty the ink tank:
    • If you want to be thorough, empty the ink tank completely by gently squeezing it and wiping out any residual ink.
    • Once the tank is cleaned, you can try refilling it with the correct black ink. If you don’t want to risk further issues, it might be safer to replace the tank entirely.
  5. Reinsert the ink tank carefully and power up the printer again.
  6. Run a cleaning cycle: Once the correct ink is in place, run a cleaning cycle from the printer's menu to ensure the system is properly primed.

If the error persists or cleaning the tank doesn't resolve the issue, it may be necessary to replace the tank altogether.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
