We recently put a new toner cartridge in our HP 2015 laser printer and quickly learned (first by the terrible noise and then by comparing it to the old one) that it was not the correct cartridge. The box clearly indicates that it's for a 2015. Attached is a photo of the two cartridges and a photo of the box end, indicating that it's for a 2015 printer. We don't remember where we purchased the cartridge. An employee of the most likely store suggested that we contact HP for a solution. How can we replace the wrong cartridge with the correct one?

That cartridge is the correct one for P2015. The cartridge on the left is XL size which is different in size.
You will hardly get a replacement for that cartridge because it's very old, that box is probably from 7-8 years ago, HP replaced it with a new box design and you will hardly get a replacement for such an old stock cartridge.

An 8 year old cartridge, depending on how it was stored might have a doctor blade bonded to the drum unit. You could try contacting HP directly and see if they will replace under the print quality warranty that is valid until cartridge reaches low.
