I get an error after installing the 67XL ink cartridges, both color and black. The 67 regular work fine.

Hi @spwdm,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

When an HP printer accepts standard cartridges but rejects XL ones, it is usually due to unremoved protective tape, a printer memory glitch, or dirty electrical contacts. It can also be caused by regional lockouts if the XL cartridges were purchased in a different country.

Follow these steps to get your HP 67XL cartridges recognized:

1. Remove Protective Tape:

Double-check both the black and color 67XL cartridges for any clear protective tape covering the copper-colored electrical contacts or the ink nozzles. The printer will not detect them if the contacts are covered.

2. Reset the Printer's Memory:

Printers sometimes store the memory of the previous (regular) cartridges and need to be forced to re-read the new XL ones:

  1. Turn on the printer and open the cartridge access door.

  2. Remove the 67XL cartridges and put the old, working regular 67 cartridges back in.

  3. Close the door and wait about 10 minutes for the printer to recognize the regular cartridges again.

  4. Open the door, remove the regular cartridges, and install the 67XL cartridges.

3. Clean the Electrical Contacts:

Dirt or a manufacturing residue on the gold/copper chips of the XL cartridges can prevent the printer from communicating with them:

  1. Remove the 67XL cartridges and turn off the printer.

  2. Take a slightly damp, lint-free cloth or cotton swab (use distilled water or rubbing alcohol).

  3. Gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the back of the cartridges and the corresponding metal pins inside the printer carriage.

  4. Let the contacts dry for 10 minutes, then re-install and snap the cartridges firmly into place.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
