I am trying to set up my new HP 8120e printer and it will not recognize the yellow ink cartridge despite following  your trouble shooting protocols.  Would it be possible to have a new one sent to me asap?

Hi @AngelaM70

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I can imagine how disappointing it feels to set up a brand‑new printer and immediately face a cartridge recognition issue—especially after carefully following the troubleshooting steps.

Thank you for already working through those checks, that effort really helps narrow down the cause.

Let's make sure the cartridge is seated and detected properly, and then I’ll point you to the right place to request a replacement if needed.

Steps to Try Before Replacement

Reseat the Cartridge

  • Power on the printer.
  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove the yellow cartridge, check the copper contacts for any dust or ink residue.
  • Wipe gently with a lint‑free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water, then dry fully.
  • Reinsert firmly until it clicks into place.

Check Protective Tape

  • Ensure the orange pull tab and protective tape on the cartridge were completely removed before installation.

Update Firmware

  • On your Windows PC, open the HP App.
  • Select your printer, go to Settings > Advanced Settings > Firmware Update.
  • Install any available updates—this ensures the printer recognizes new cartridges correctly.

Reset the Printer

  • With the printer powered on, unplug the power cord from the wall.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and power on.

Once the cartridge is properly recognized, the printer should complete setup and allow you to print normally. Would you like me to also share how to run a print quality diagnostic page once the cartridge is accepted, so you can confirm everything is working perfectly?

If my response helped, please mark it as an Accepted Solution It helps others and spreads support. 💙 Also, tapping "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" makes a big difference! Thanks! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
