Hi @PAlbert,
Thanks for getting back to us and sharing those details! I totally get how confusing this situation can be, especially when your printer's status report isn’t showing what you expected after installing a new cartridge. Let’s work through this together!
Here are a few things to check:
1️⃣ Cartridge Seating: Sometimes, removing the cartridge and reinstalling it can help. Try taking out the Cyan cartridge, gently wiping the contacts with a lint-free cloth, and putting it back in securely.
2️⃣ Firmware Update: If your printer’s firmware isn’t up to date, it might not recognize the cartridge correctly. You can check for updates on your printer’s control panel or on HP’s support website.
3️⃣ Printer Status Report Differences: You mentioned that your previously installed cartridges were listed as HP 951 Z10, but the new one is showing just HP 951. This could be because of regional packaging differences. As long as it’s a genuine HP 951 cartridge, it should work fine—but the system might be recognizing it slightly differently.
4️⃣ Ink Level Concerns: The printer should usually detect a new cartridge as full. If it’s showing half-full right after installation, it might be worth running a test print or a diagnostic report to see if the ink level changes. If it still looks off, the cartridge could be faulty.
If the issue persists, I’d recommend reaching out to the retailer where you purchased the cartridge
Take care, and have an amazing day!

@PAlbert, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your Z10 ink cartridges!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
The HP 951 and HP 951 Z10 cartridges are both designed for HP OfficeJet printers that use the HP 950/951 ink series. However, there are some key differences:
HP 951 Standard Cartridge
- Regular ink cartridge for HP OfficeJet printers.
- Comes in Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow colors.
- Standard ink capacity.
HP 951 Z10 Cartridge
- "Z10" is an internal HP designation and does not indicate a high-yield (XL) cartridge.
- It typically refers to region-specific or specially packaged cartridges.
- The ink volume remains the same as the standard HP 951.
Do Z10 Cartridges Have More Ink?
No, HP 951 Z10 cartridges do not contain more ink than the standard HP 951. If you're looking for higher ink capacity, you should consider the HP 951XL series, which offers more pages per cartridge.
If you need further clarification, feel free to ask!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thanks for your reply.
My questions stems from a recent experience. After I installed the HP Cyan cartridge I purchased, the printer status report indicated the cartridge was only half full. It also said that I had installed an HP 951 cartridge. The other previously installed HP cartridges were listed as HP 951 z10 cartridges.
In the past, the Printer status report showed a newly installed cartridge as being full. Do I have a defective Cyan cartridge?
