black ink cartridge 63 printing blotchy

My black ink cartridge is printing blotchy and smeared.  At first it was not printing at all, but I wiped it all down and the blank ink now seems to be coming out, but it is faint, blotchy and smeared.  I have run all the cleaning diagnostics and wiped the cartridge and carrier multiple times.  I am using HP 63xl cartridge.  Color cartridge works fine.
