Hi @darren80,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP DeskJet 2734e printer is not recognizing brand-new black ink cartridges, the issue could stem from several factors. Here's a step-by-step troubleshooting guide.
Verify Cartridge Compatibility
- Ensure the black ink cartridge is compatible with your HP DeskJet 2734e. It typically uses HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridges.
- Check the packaging or the cartridge itself for the correct part number.
Inspect the Cartridge
- Protective Tape: Ensure the protective tape on the cartridge's electrical contacts has been fully removed.
- Contacts and Nozzles:
- Inspect the electrical contacts (gold or copper-colored area) and nozzles for damage or dirt.
- Gently clean these contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
- Allow it to dry for a few minutes before reinserting it.
Check Printer Contacts
- Open the printer’s ink cartridge access area and inspect the electrical contacts inside the printer.
- If you see any ink smudges or debris, carefully clean them with a soft, lint-free cloth and distilled water.
Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the printer to power and turn it back on.
- Reinsert the black cartridge.
Update Printer Firmware
- Outdated firmware might cause the printer not to recognize newer cartridges.
- Update your printer's firmware via the HP Smart App or by visiting the HP Support website.
Run the Printer Troubleshooter
- Use the HP Smart App:
- Open the app, navigate to your printer, and select "Printer Maintenance" or "Troubleshoot."
- On Windows:
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and choose Run Troubleshooter.
Try a Factory Reset
- If the issue persists, perform a factory reset:
- Turn off the printer.
- Hold down the Power button and Cancel button together for 10–20 seconds.
- Release the buttons when the printer restarts.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
