HI there,

So I have cleaned the printer with self cleaning and run diagnostics and the pages that print from these are perfect, but when I attempt to print any documents, they come out blurry like printing double so all the letters look like they are in a shadow. From my computer side, I have a fairly new Mac and have done all the resets and updates available. Any clue on how to fix this? I have an HP OfficeJet 4650 All-in-one printer series and the warranty is expired.

Hi @DrSunday,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with an issue that could be either software-related or specific to the document settings you're using when attempting to print. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the problem:

Check Printer Settings in Your Document Software: Ensure that the settings within the software you are using to print (like Microsoft Word, PDF viewer, etc.) are set correctly. Sometimes, specific document settings can override general printer settings, causing issues like double printing or shadows.

Update Printer Drivers: Since you mentioned you have a fairly new Mac, it's essential to make sure that your printer drivers are up to date. Follow these steps:

  • Go to the Apple menu and select 'System Preferences.'
  • Click on 'Printers & Scanners.'
  • Select your printer from the list and click on the 'Options & Supplies' button.
  • Go to the 'Utility' tab and click on 'Open Printer Utility' to check for updates directly from the utility provided by HP.

Reset the Printing System:

  • Right-click (or Ctrl-click) in the list of printers on the left side of the 'Printers & Scanners' window.
  • Choose ‘Reset printing system’ from the context menu that appears.
  • Add your printer again by clicking the plus (+) sign and following the on-screen instructions to reinstall the printer.

Check for Alignment and Calibration Issues: Since the diagnostics and self-cleaning pages print correctly but documents do not, it could be an issue with how the printer is interpreting document files:

  • Use the HP Utility software to check if there are options for aligning the printer or further calibrating it. This can sometimes resolve issues related to text appearance.

Try Printing from a Different Application: If you are using a specific application, try printing from a different application to see if the issue persists. For instance, if the problem occurs when printing from Word, try printing from Pages or a PDF to see if there is any difference.

Examine the File Itself:Check if the issue occurs with all documents or specific files. Sometimes, the file itself might be corrupted or formatted in a way that doesn't translate well to printing.

Check the Paper Type and Quality Settings: Ensure that the paper type and quality settings on your printer match the paper you are using. Incorrect settings can sometimes cause printing issues like blurring or shadowing.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
