How to bypass the incompatible cartridge error for my printer so I can use the products of my choosing.

Hi @LS-Moz777

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m sorry for the frustration this error is causing.

There is no way to bypass an incompatible cartridge error (if non HP cartridge)—HP printers are designed to work only with cartridges that are specifically supported for each model.

To resolve the issue, you will need to use the correct, compatible cartridges for your printer.

If you are facing an issue using non-HP ink cartridges on your printer, then please refer to the below links for more information related to your issue.

If you are using generic or non-HP ink cartridges and the above links do not help. You will have to contact the generic ink cartridge manufacturer to assist you further with it, or you will have to use genuine HP ink cartridges to resume printing.

I believe that it is illegal that HP codes their printers to only function using their own product toner.  It may break monopoly laws.  And there are ways to bypass this.

I broke down and bought a HP toner.  It cost USD $125.  The non-HP toner was $40, so HP is 3 times the price.  Guess what?  It still says incompatible.  I live in Africa andI buy what is available, so don't tell me it must be pirated.  I have spent days trying to resolve this issue.  I am an unhappy customer!

Thank you for sharing your experience—I can completely understand how frustrating and disappointing this must be, especially after investing in an original HP toner.

You’ve clearly gone to great lengths to resolve this, and I appreciate your persistence.

To help get to the bottom of the “incompatible cartridge” message, could you please share the following details:

  • The exact model number of your HP printer (e.g., LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw)
  • The cartridge number you purchased (e.g., 58A, 206X, etc.)
  • Any part number printed on the toner box or cartridge itself (usually starts with “W” or “CF”)
  • Whether the printer was originally purchased in your current country or imported from another region

This information will help determine if there’s a regional mismatch between the printer and the toner cartridge, which can sometimes cause compatibility errors even with genuine HP supplies.

Once I have those details, I’ll guide you through the next steps. We’ll get this sorted.

Thanks,

Printer and Toner purchased at my location in Nothern Mozambique

I can understand how upsetting it feels to invest in an original toner and still be met with an “incompatible cartridge” message.

Thank you for sharing the exact printer and toner details—that helps us narrow down the situation.

Your HP Laser MFP 1376fnw uses the HP 107A (W1107A) toner cartridge. Since both the printer and toner were purchased locally in Mozambique, the most likely cause of the error is a regional mismatch or a communication issue between the cartridge chip and the printer. Even genuine HP supplies can show “incompatible” if the cartridge region does not match the printer’s region code.

Steps you can try

Power reset the printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds, then reconnect and power it back on.

Reseat the toner cartridge

  • Open the toner access door.
  • Remove the toner cartridge and gently wipe the chip contacts with a lint‑free cloth.
  • Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.

Check firmware updates

  • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup > Service > LaserJet Update.
  • If connected to the internet, allow the printer to check for updates.
  • Firmware updates can improve cartridge recognition.

Confirm cartridge region

  • The HP 107A toner is manufactured for specific regions. If the printer was imported from another country, the cartridge may not match the printer’s regional coding.
  • If you suspect this, you can verify by checking the part number (W1107A) against the printer’s supported supplies list.

Since you’ve confirmed both printer and toner were purchased locally, reseating the cartridge, updating firmware, and checking regional compatibility are the most effective steps. If the mismatch persists, it points to a region code conflict rather than the cartridge being non‑genuine.

None of this helps me.  I still cannot print.  I bought this HP Laser MFP127 fnw about 4 months ago for $500.  I have bought 2 toners, HP original for $125 and another brand for $40.  So I have invested about $700 and a lot of my time, in this HP bad experience.  I cannot continue to buy cartridges until I happen upon one that your fringing printer accepts.  This must be illegal.  I have tried everything that you suggest, plus others. .  I am having to go to copy centers in order to process my work.  I am frustrated and really unhappy with HP.
