Hi @ShawnnaP

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're having trouble printing in color with your new color cartridge on the HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One printer, there are a few things you can check and try to resolve the issue:

1. Check Printer Settings

Make sure that the printer settings are set to print in color:

  • Windows:
    1. Open the document you want to print.
    2. Click on "File" > "Print" and select your HP ENVY 4520 printer.
    3. Click on "Printer Properties" or "Preferences."
    4. Ensure that the "Color" setting is selected, not "Black & White" or "Grayscale."
  • Mac:
    1. Open the document you want to print.
    2. Click "File" > "Print."
    3. In the print dialog, check the "Color Options" and ensure that "Color" is selected.

2. Check Cartridge Installation

Ensure the color cartridge is properly installed:

  • Open the printer’s ink cartridge access door.
  • Ensure that the color cartridge is securely placed in the appropriate slot.
  • Check for any protective tape or packaging that might still be on the cartridge. Remove it if necessary.

3. Check Ink Levels

Even with a new cartridge, sometimes there can be issues with ink detection. You can check ink levels through your printer’s software or on the printer’s display:

  • If ink levels are low (even if it's a new cartridge), try re-seating the cartridge or replacing it.

4. Run a Printer Diagnostic or Cleaning

Sometimes the print head may be clogged or the printer may need to be cleaned:

  • On your printer’s control panel, find the "Tools" or "Maintenance" section.
  • Run a Clean Printhead or Printer Diagnostic. This can help clear any blockages in the printhead that might prevent color ink from coming out properly.

5. Check for Driver Issues

Ensure you have the latest printer driver installed. Outdated or corrupted drivers might cause issues with color printing:

  • Go to the HP website and check for any available driver updates for your printer model.

I hope this helps.

I appreciate your message, Sneha, and I had already uploaded the latest driver for my printer. However, in my Word 365 software, there is no option under Printer Properties, Advanced, to choose either black/white or color. Not sure what to do....

Hi @ShawnnaP,

Thank you for your response.

It sounds like the issue is with the color printing option not being available in your Word 365 software, even though you've installed the latest driver. This can sometimes be a driver or settings issue. Let’s go through a few steps to help you resolve it:

1. Check Printer Settings in Word 365

  • Open Word 365 and click on File > Print.
  • Select your printer from the list of available printers.
  • Under Printer Properties, look for a tab called Color or Quality (it might vary depending on the printer and driver).
  • If there’s no option to choose between black/white or color, it’s possible the driver hasn't been correctly applied or the wrong default settings are being used.

2. Set the Printer to Color Printing in Windows 10

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Find your printer, click on it, and select Manage.
  • Click on Printing Preferences.
  • Look for an option under Color or Print Quality and make sure it is set to Color rather than Black & White or Grayscale.
  • Save the settings and exit.

3. Check the Printer Driver in Device Manager

  • Open Device Manager (right-click on the Start menu and select Device Manager).
  • Expand the Printers section and find your printer.
  • Right-click on it and choose Update Driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software and follow the prompts to make sure you're using the latest version of the printer driver.
  • Alternatively, you can also try Uninstalling and Reinstalling the printer driver to ensure a fresh installation.

4. Check for Specific Color Settings in the Printer’s Web Interface (if applicable)

  • If your printer has a built-in web interface (like many HP printers do), you can access it by typing the printer’s IP address in a web browser.
  • You can find the IP address by printing a Network Configuration Page (usually found under the printer settings or Network tab).

I hope this helps.
