Hi @EKIM000,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're encountering an issue with HP printers. Even if you're only printing in black and white, the printer still checks all cartridges, including the color ones.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the "depleted cartridge" message:

1. Check Cartridge Compatibility

Ensure that the new black cartridge is the correct model for the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740.

2. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

3. Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove the new black cartridge.
  • Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge with a lint-free cloth or coffee filter lightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Let the contacts dry for a few minutes.
  • Reinsert the cartridge and close the access door.

4. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Go to the HP Support website.
  • Search for your printer model and download the latest firmware update.
  • Follow the instructions to install the update.

5. Check for Blocked Ink Vents

  • Remove the new black cartridge.
  • Check for any tape or residue on the cartridge's ink vents and remove it.
  • Ensure that the vent is not blocked.

6. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn on the printer.
  • With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer back on.

7. Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to diagnose and fix issues with your printer.

8. Replace the Color Cartridges

Even though you don't use color printing, some HP printers require that all cartridges be functional to print. Try replacing the color cartridges with new ones or using a set of color cartridges that are not empty.

9. Check Printer Settings

  • Ensure that your printer settings are configured correctly for black and white printing.
  • Sometimes, even with settings for black and white printing, the printer may still require functional color cartridges.

Depleted Cartridges must be replaced to resume printing

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
