Deskjet 2640. NEVER use color cartridge but it shows empty. On inkjet printer support page it states: "Certain printers can print with an empty cartridge, while others require that all cartridges have some ink. Identify your cartridge type for details."which i did (65). It then states:
"21, 22, 27, 28, 56-67, 61/301, 63/302, 64/303, 65/304, 74, 75, 92-98, 304, 305, 901 cartridges:
Printers that use two cartridges (one black, one tri-color) can print if one cartridge is empty.
To continue printing, remove the empty cartridge from the printer. If a Single-cartridge mode message displays, select OK." This information is wrong.

Hi @MonaD1,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing a common issue with inkjet printers like the HP Deskjet 2640. Even though you haven't used the color cartridge, it's showing as empty. This can be frustrating, especially if you primarily use black ink.
First, it's important to note that many inkjet printers, including those from HP, use a small amount of ink from all cartridges for tasks like cleaning and maintenance of the print heads. This happens even if you only print in black and white, which might explain why your color cartridge is showing as empty.
According to the information you provided, your printer should technically be able to continue printing even if one of the cartridges is empty, by entering a "Single-cartridge mode." This mode should activate when one of the cartridges is removed, allowing the printer to operate using only the remaining cartridge.
Here are some steps you can try:
Remove the Color Cartridge: Try removing the color cartridge and see if the printer will allow you to print using only the black cartridge. If a message pops up about "Single-cartridge mode," select OK as indicated.
Check Printer Settings: Make sure that your printer settings on your computer are set to use the black ink cartridge only. This can usually be done through the printer preferences pane in the print dialog or in the printer's software on your computer.
Reset the Cartridges: Sometimes, simply removing the cartridge and reinserting it can reset the ink level sensor. Turn off your printer, remove the cartridge, and then reinstall it. Turn your printer back on and see if the error persists.
Update Firmware/Software: Check if there are any firmware or software updates available for your printer. Sometimes HP release updates that fix bugs related to cartridge detection and other functions.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
