To disable cartridge protection for your HP LaserJet MFP M234dwe printer on Windows 11, follow these steps:
Option 1: Using HP Smart App
Open the HP Smart app on your Windows 11 computer.
- If you don’t have it installed, you can download it from the Microsoft Store.
Log in to your HP account if prompted.
Select your printer from the list of connected printers.
Go to the Settings or Advanced Settings section.
- You may find this under Printer Settings or Tools.
Look for Cartridge Protection in the settings.
Disable Cartridge Protection by switching the setting off.
Save the changes.
Restart the printer to ensure the changes take effect.
Option 2: Using Embedded Web Server (EWS)
If you cannot find the option through HP Smart, try accessing the printer’s Embedded Web Server:
Make sure the printer is connected to your Wi-Fi network.
Find the printer’s IP address:
- On your printer, press the Wi-Fi button to print a Network Configuration Report that contains the IP address.
- You can also find the IP through the HP Smart app under Printer Information.
On your Windows 11 computer, open a web browser and enter the printer's IP address in the address bar.
This will open the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
In the EWS interface, navigate to the Settings tab.
Look for Cartridge Protection under the Supply Settings or similar menu.
Disable Cartridge Protection, and then click Apply to save the changes.
Restart the printer.

Thank you Gaya, the second option worked. I am surprised even when I called your helpline they refused to assist me with regard to my query, also all other forums too asked me to resolve the issue with my hp smart app. The website and the app all make things more difficult and complicate a straight forward query.
