If you tell me what printer model you have I can tell you how to disable cartridge protection, but that may not be what you are expecting.
When a cartridge is put in a printer with cartridge protection enabled (the default) it will mark the cartridge so it cannot be used in a different printer. Turning off cartridge protection will not allow cartridges that have been marked to be used in different printer, it will only affect if cartridges are marked in the first place. Once a cartridge has been marked as "protected" it cannot be reset.
