Hi @jatou

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I know how frustrating PCL XL errors can be, especially when you have already reinstalled the software and driver. Let me help you get this sorted.

The PCL XL Error: Illegal Tag usually happens because of a corrupted print driver, incorrect print settings, or communication problems between the printer and the computer. Here are the steps that normally resolve this issue.

Install the HP Basic PCL6 Driver & Firmware Update(Most Reliable Fix)

The full‑featured drivers sometimes trigger PCL XL errors, so switching to the Basic PCL6 driver often fixes it.

  1. Go to the HP Software and Drivers page: Official HP® Support
  2. Enter your printer model and select the Windows version
  3. Under Driver‑Product Installation Software, scroll to “Basic Drivers”
  4. Download and install the HP LaserJet PCL6 Printer Driver

After installing, restart the PC and try printing again.

Change Print Driver Settings

If the issue continues, update the print processor:

  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Select Devices and Printers
  3. Right-click your printer and select Printer Properties
  4. Go to the Advanced tab
  5. Click Print Processor
  6. Select HP Print Processor and set the default output as RAW
  7. Save and try printing again

This resolves most “Illegal Tag” errors.

Disable Advanced Printing Features

  1. Open Devices and Printers
  2. Right-click your HP printer
  3. Choose Printer Properties
  4. Go to Advanced
  5. Untick Enable Advanced Printing Features

Try printing again.
