Hi @clamdream,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for reaching out. If your HP ENVY 6100e series printer is new and you're finding that the black cartridge carriage won’t lock in place while the color cartridge locks fine, here’s what we can try.

1. Check Cartridge Type & Orientation:

  • Make sure you're using the correct HP ink cartridge model for the ENVY 6100e series — typically HP 67 or HP 67xl (or HP 305/305xl in some regions).
  • Confirm the black cartridge is not reversed — the label should face up and the copper-colored contacts should be inserted first, pointing toward the back.

2. Gently Push Until a Click:

  • The black cartridge should tilt slightly upward at first, then press it down firmly until it clicks into place.
  • If you don’t feel resistance or it bounces back up, the latch or slot may not be properly aligned.

3. Inspect the Carriage Slot:

  • Look inside the black cartridge slot for any packing material, protective tape, or even a small obstruction.
  • Sometimes, a small piece of blue tape (from packaging) is overlooked inside.

4. Compare with the Color Slot:

  • Look closely at the color slot's locking mechanism, then compare it with the black slot. They should look identical — if they don’t, the black side might be damaged or defective from the factory.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
