Product: HP OfficeJet 5255 All-in-One Printer

I don't understand the Smart Ink program and have wasted siginificant amount of time on myriad HP websites and unable to contact a human representative.  I am low on ink and need to recycle my existing catridges and get new ones.  I don't know how to do that.  Any advice welcome..
