Hi @ESOS,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Cleaning toner out of the paper path in your Color LaserJet M281fdw printer involves several steps to ensure that the toner is completely removed and doesn't continue to cause print quality issues or further jams. Here's a detailed step-by-step guide to help you clean the printer effectively:
Turn Off and Unplug the Printer
- Safety First: Ensure the printer is turned off and unplugged from the power source. This is important to avoid any electrical hazards or damage to the printer components.
Access the Printer Interior
- Open the Printer: Open the toner cartridge access door. Depending on your model, this is usually located on the front of the printer.
- Remove Toner Cartridges: Carefully remove the toner cartridges. Place them on a clean sheet of paper or in a plastic bag to avoid contamination and spilling toner on your workspace.
Clean the Paper Path
- Inspect for Toner Spills: Look for loose toner inside the printer. If you see spilled toner, use a dry, lint-free cloth to gently wipe it away. Avoid using wet cloths or household cleaners as they can damage the printer parts.
- Use a Toner Vacuum (if available): If you have access to a toner vacuum, use it to remove any residual toner from inside the printer. Toner vacuums are designed to safely clean up fine particles without causing damage.
- Use Compressed Air: You can use a can of compressed air to blow away any toner dust from hard-to-reach areas. Be sure to do this in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling toner particles.
Check and Clean Other Components
- Clean the Fuser: The fuser assembly can also accumulate toner. Carefully wipe any excess toner off the fuser with a dry cloth. Do not touch the fuser roller with bare hands as the oil from your skin can cause print quality problems.
- Check for Paper Debris: Ensure there is no paper stuck anywhere along the paper path. Remove any jammed or torn pieces of paper carefully.
Reassemble and Test the Printer
- Reinstall Toner Cartridges: Once everything is clean, reinstall the toner cartridges. Ensure they are properly seated and locked in place.
- Close the Printer and Reconnect Power: Close up the printer, plug it back in, and turn it on.
- Run a Test Print: Print a test page or a cleaning page if your printer has that function. This can help remove any residual toner on the rollers.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thank you Rahel571,
This is very helpful. I am sorry, I should have told you that we have a Color LaserJet MFP 281 FDW. Your response will be helpful but my concern is that I may not be able to get all the toner out of the paper path. We replaced the Magenta cartridge and it appears to have been defective...already taken that up with my supplier...and the toner dumped out into the printer onto the photoreceptor belt which of course spread it all over the inside of the printer housing.
Is there a good way to remove the belt without damaging it so we can further blow out the toner that is inside the housing. We are a small shop and do not have any kind of service plan with a local HP rep. We have replaced it with a new HP printer but we are just trying to salvage this one if we can so we have two printers for the future.
Thanks again

Hi @ESOS,
Thank you for your response. I will surely help you with the steps.
Cleaning toner out of the paper path in a Color LaserJet MFP 281 FDW can help resolve issues like streaks, smudges, or inconsistent print quality. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you clean the toner from the paper path of your printer safely:
Turn off and Unplug the Printer:
- Ensure that the printer is turned off and unplugged from the power source to avoid any electrical hazard or damage to the printer components.
Access the Printer Interior:
- Open the printer doors and panels to access the interior where the toner cartridges and paper path are located.
Remove the Toner Cartridges:
- Carefully remove the toner cartridges from the printer. Place them on a flat surface covered with paper or plastic to avoid spills or contamination.
Check for Toner Spills:
- Inspect the interior of the printer for loose toner. Toner can accumulate on rollers, trays, and other components along the paper path.
Clean the Interior Components:
- Use a dry lint-free cloth to gently wipe away any loose toner from the interior of the printer. Avoid using water or cleaning solutions unless specifically recommended by the manufacturer.
- For stubborn toner marks, you might use a toner vacuum or a specialized toner cleaning cloth. These are designed to pick up toner without dispersing it into the air.
Clean the Toner Cartridge Area:
- Wipe the area where the toner cartridges sit as toner can accumulate here as well.
Reinstall the Toner Cartridges:
- Once the cleaning is complete, reinstall the toner cartridges. Make sure they are seated properly in their designated spots.
Close the Printer and Test:
- Close all doors and panels. Plug in the printer, turn it on, and run a few test prints to ensure everything is working correctly and that the print quality has improved.
Regular Maintenance:
- Regular maintenance and cleaning of your printer can prevent toner spill issues and extend the life of your printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
