Hello, I just purchased a new HP 6400e printer. I keep getting the error 3 message. I have tried everything. Reinstalled the cartridges plus cleaned the backing. It keeps saying the cartridge carriage is stalled. Please help.

Hi @maekid98,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
An "Error 3" on an HP 6400e printer, which indicates that the cartridge carriage is stalled, can be quite frustrating. This error typically means that the printer’s carriage, where the ink cartridges are located, is having trouble moving or is obstructed. Here’s a detailed guide to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:
1. Check for Obstructions
1.1. Turn Off and Unplug
- Power Off: Turn off the printer using the power button.
- Unplug: Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
1.2. Inspect Carriage Area
- Open Access Door: Open the printer’s cartridge access door.
- Clear Obstructions: Look for any paper scraps, foreign objects, or anything else that might be blocking the carriage from moving. Remove any obstructions carefully.
1.3. Manually Move Carriage
- Move Carriage: Gently move the cartridge carriage from side to side to ensure it moves freely. Be cautious not to apply too much force.
2. Check Cartridges
2.1. Remove and Reinstall Cartridges
- Remove Cartridges: Carefully remove the ink cartridges from the carriage.
- Inspect Cartridges: Check for any packaging material, protective tape, or other debris on the cartridges.
- Reinstall Cartridges: Reinstall the cartridges, ensuring they click into place securely.
2.2. Verify Cartridge Placement
- Correct Position: Ensure that the cartridges are correctly positioned and that the carriage is not misaligned.
3. Clean the Carriage and Printer
3.1. Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- Gently Clean Contacts: Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab slightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the carriage. Allow them to dry completely before reinstalling.
3.2. Clean the Printer Interior
- Use Compressed Air: Carefully use compressed air to clean the interior of the printer, focusing on areas around the carriage and paper feed areas.
4. Check for Mechanical Issues
4.1. Inspect Belt and Gears
- Check Belts: Look for any visible issues with the belts or gears that might be preventing the carriage from moving properly.
- Align Gears: Ensure that the gears are properly aligned and functioning smoothly.
5. Perform a Printer Reset
5.1. Reset Printer
- Power Cycle: With the printer unplugged, wait for about 60 seconds. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Reset to Factory Defaults: If available, perform a factory reset from the printer’s control panel. Check your printer’s manual for specific instructions.
6. Update Printer Firmware
6.1. Check for Firmware Updates
- Download Updates: Visit the HP Support website and check for any firmware updates for your HP 6400e printer.
- Install Updates: Follow the instructions to download and install the latest firmware.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
