hi few months ago my friend gave me his used inks 950/951 since his printer broke down and bought a new one

He had 8600 while i have 8100 but both use the same inks. Today when i needed to change ink i replaced it with one of his but got the message that are locked to his printer.

Is there any way to unlock them so i can use them or are just paper weight now and throw them out?

@khaled132, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

When you are experiencing issues with locked ink cartridges, it's important to know that some HP printers have a feature that can lock ink cartridges to the original printer they were used with. This feature is used to prevent the reuse of cartridges across different printers, particularly in managed environments. Here are a few things you can try:

Check the Printer Settings:

  • Some HP printers allow you to disable the "Cartridge Protection" setting. This may be accessed through the printer's control panel or via the HP software on your computer. If available, disabling cartridge protection might allow you to use the ink cartridges.

Reinstall the Ink Cartridges:

  • Make sure the ink cartridges are installed correctly. Remove and then reinstall them to ensure good contact with the print head.

Update the Printer Firmware:

  • Occasionally, firmware updates can resolve compatibility issues. Check if a new firmware update is available for your printer model and follow the HP instructions to install it.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

@garp_senchau thank you for your reply.

just to clarify

1) 8600 printer is not available anymore

2) inks are locked to 8600

3) 8100 printer doesnt "accept" inks as protected from another printer.

4) 8100 printer has protection disabled

a) can the 8100 disable protection from inks that are already protected from another printer?

b) inks are installed correctly as are being recognized as protected

c)there is no new update firmware

regards
