Hi @K4R

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it must be to see a supply system error even after replacing the cartridge more than once. You’ve already taken a thoughtful step by changing the black cartridge, so let’s go through a structured set of actions that can help clear this error on your HP OfficeJet 7740.

Step-by-step actions

Power reset the printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for 2 minutes.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Turn the printer back on and check if the error clears.

Reseat the cartridges

  • Open the ink access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving.
  • Remove all cartridges, not just the black one.
  • Inspect the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the carriage for ink or debris.
  • Wipe gently with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Allow to dry completely, then reinstall all cartridges firmly.

Check cartridge compatibility

  • Ensure you are using genuine HP 952/953 series cartridges (depending on your region).
  • Mismatched or non-genuine cartridges can trigger supply system errors.

Update printer firmware

  • Open the HP App on your Windows PC.
  • Go to Settings → Printer Update.
  • Install any available updates to ensure the printer recognizes cartridges correctly.

Run printhead cleaning utility

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Settings → Printer Maintenance → Clean Printhead.
  • Follow the prompts to complete the cleaning cycle.
  • This helps clear any ink flow or sensor issues.

Remove and reinstall printhead (if error persists)

  • Open the ink access door, lift the latch, and carefully remove the printhead.
  • Gently clean the copper-colored contacts with a lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert the printhead securely, close the latch, and restart the printer.

You’ve already shown persistence by replacing the cartridge twice. If after reseating all cartridges and updating firmware the error still appears, the next step is to clean and reseat the printhead.

Would you like me to walk you through the printhead removal and cleaning process step by step, so you can try that safely?
