Problem: Cartridge door will not open.
- I let the printer start up from power off mode and get to its ready state.
- I use the side slots to gently lift. The door only goes about half an inch up.
- Yellow light activates in the forward right corner of the door and gives "uh oh" sound .
I need to replace both the color and black ink cartridges - but obviously can't with this issue. I've dug through the HP smart app for some kind of settings that would allow for "unlock" or something, but there is nothing. Any advice of solutions appreciated.
I've tried all power on/off, unplug/wait, etc. proposed solutions. I'm on verge of just forcing it open and dealing with it.
Thanks!

Hi @hewpack5377,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue with the cartridge door on your HP Envy 6455e not opening fully may be caused by a misalignment, a mechanical jam, or an internal sensor that prevents the door from unlocking properly. Forcing it open is not recommended, as it can cause permanent damage. Here’s how you can try to resolve the issue.
Ensure Printer is on and Idle
- Make sure the printer is turned on, fully booted to the ready state, and not in sleep mode. If the printer is initializing or performing maintenance, the door may remain locked.
Check for Obstructions
- Inspect the area around the cartridge door and inside the side slots for any debris, jammed paper, or parts that might block the door from opening.
Gently Reset the Door Mechanism
- Apply light downward pressure on the door, then lift it gently again. Sometimes, this can reset the lock mechanism. Avoid excessive force.
Use the Printer's Menu
- If the printer has a display panel, check for an option related to "Replace Cartridges" or "Cartridge Access." Some printers require initiating a replacement mode via the menu.
Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for at least 3 minutes.
- While plugging it back in, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, then release. This forces a hardware reset that may resolve a jammed mechanism.
Check for Firmware Update
- Use the HP Smart app or visit the HP Support site to check for a firmware update for your printer. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause glitches in mechanical operations.
Manual Access via Service Mode
- Some HP printers have a service mode or maintenance mode accessible by specific button sequences. Refer to your user manual for instructions.
If the Door Still Won’t Open
- Inspect for Mechanical Issues:
- Use a flashlight to look through the side slots or other openings for any visibly stuck parts.

Temporary Alternative
If you urgently need to print and the door remains inaccessible:
- Check if the cartridges still have some ink left through the HP Smart app.
- Use single-color printing as a workaround until the door issue is resolved.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hello,
I resolved the issue by gently forcing the door up and open. Seems the mechanism / hinge on one side is mechanically faulty or misaligned and therefore makes it difficult to open the lid - even at times when the cartridge light is flashing and needs attention. I managed to get it open, change the cartridges, and print.
Thank you for your attention and assistance with detailed information / possible solutions.
Regards,
