Hi @Etta67,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8620 is reporting that the printhead is missing, it can be frustrating. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

1. Turn Off and Restart the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Check if the issue persists after the printer restarts.

2. Check Printhead Installation

  • Open the printer’s top cover to access the printhead.
  • Ensure the printhead is properly seated. If it seems loose, gently press down on it until it clicks into place.
  • Make sure the printhead is aligned properly and that there are no obstructions.

3. Clean the Printhead and Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Carefully remove the printhead from the printer.
  • Use a lint-free cloth and some distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on both the printhead and the printer.
  • Allow everything to dry completely before reassembling.

4. Check for Printhead Errors

  • The printer might display specific error messages related to the printhead. Refer to the printer’s manual or HP’s support website for information on error codes and what they mean.

5. Reset the Printer

  • Sometimes a reset can help resolve communication issues between the printhead and the printer.
  • Perform a factory reset on the printer by going to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore or Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults. Note that this will reset the printer settings to factory defaults, so you might need to reconfigure your printer settings.

6. Update or Reinstall Printer Firmware

  • Visit the HP Support website and check if there is a firmware update available for your printer.
  • Download and install any available updates, as these can sometimes fix bugs related to hardware recognition.

7. Check for Blocked Air Vents

  • Ensure that there are no obstructions or debris in the printer’s air vents or around the printhead area. Blockages can sometimes cause detection issues.

8. Replace the Printhead

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
