If you buy ink from 3rd party on amazon you can get the firmware download from them but you have to run in Administrator account.

@alannsandiego, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're having trouble with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 not recognizing non-HP ink cartridges, possibly after a firmware update. I’ll do my best to help clarify and guide you through your options.

Why This Happens

HP printers like the OfficeJet Pro 8740 are designed to work best with genuine HP ink cartridges. Some firmware updates include security features that block non-HP or refilled cartridges to ensure print quality, protect the printer, and maintain system integrity.

What You Can Try

Check Cartridge Installation

Make sure the cartridges are seated properly:

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove and reinsert each cartridge firmly into its slot.

Restart the Printer

  • Power off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the wall for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power it on.

Update or Reinstall Firmware

Sometimes, firmware updates can be reversed or reinstalled:

  • Visit the HP support page and search for your model.
  • If available, download and install the latest firmware using a USB connection (not Wi-Fi).

Use Genuine HP Ink

If the issue persists, you may need to switch to genuine HP cartridges. You can verify and purchase them from the HP Store. HP anti-counterfeit | HP® Official Site

HP has faced successful lawsuits regarding its practices related to third-party ink cartridges, particularly concerning firmware updates that can "brick" printers by blocking the use of non-HP ink. Many consumers have expressed frustration over these restrictions, which they argue limit their choices and force them to purchase more expensive proprietary ink.

Recently, you filed a complaint with the California Attorney General, citing that HP has not released a firmware update to allow the use of third-party ink, which was possible when you originally purchased your printer. This action reflects ongoing consumer dissatisfaction with HP's policies and the desire for greater flexibility in using third-party products.

HP has damage my printer by requiring only HP ink which I cannot afford and which the printer accepted 3rd party ink when I bought it that is unacceptable change in term and illegal why I refer this case to CA AG. There is a pending firmware update that talks about re-enforce non 3 rd ink so I have not install it; what I look for is CA AG to enforce HP to allow 3rd parties ink that worked when I got it or HP and voluntary follow the law either one is good. I would prefer if HP would be a good citizen and release firmware to allow 3rd party ink and maybe HP could reduce the prices of their ink so people can afford it; 1/2 the price of the price each refill it to much.
