Hi @larryataide,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 printer is rejecting new cartridges and still showing them as empty, here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue.

Remove and Reinstall Cartridges:

  • Turn off your printer and wait for it to completely power down.
  • Open the cartridge access door and remove all the cartridges.
  • Check each cartridge for any protective tape or plastic film that might still be attached. Remove them if present.
  • Reinstall the cartridges firmly into their respective slots.

Clean Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Remove the cartridges again.
  • Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer carefully with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinstalling the cartridges.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn on the printer.
  • Wait for the printer to become idle and silent before continuing.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet or power strip.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  • Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause cartridge recognition issues. Check if there's a firmware update available for your printer model on the HP website and install it.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and resolve the issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 printer rejecting new cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
