hp photosmart 6520 series is locked on error message; "one or more ink cartridges are missing or damaged"
This is only for cyan. I installed an original HP cartridge #564 and I still get the error message. I verified that cartridge is fully installed and snap in. I turned power of and unplugged the printer, both for over a minute and I still get the message. Is there anything else that can try?
If not, can I set the printer to only run on black ink?

Hi @MikeH6520,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like your HP Photosmart 6520 is having trouble recognizing the cyan cartridge, despite using a genuine HP cartridge. Here are a few things you can try to fix the issue.
Check the Ink Cartridge Contacts: Sometimes, ink cartridges may not be properly recognized due to dirty or obstructed contacts. Remove the cyan cartridge and carefully clean the metal contacts on both the cartridge and the printer using a soft lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with water or isopropyl alcohol. Let it dry completely before reinstalling the cartridge.
Reset the Printer: You've already tried powering off and unplugging the printer, but it's worth doing a full reset:
- With the printer turned off, unplug the power cable.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the printer back in and power it on.
Check the Cartridge Slot: Ensure that there is nothing blocking or obstructing the cyan cartridge slot. Sometimes small pieces of paper or debris can cause miscommunication.
Try Another Cyan Cartridge: If possible, test with another original HP 564 cyan cartridge. This can help verify whether the issue lies with the cartridge itself.
Printer Firmware Update: Check if your printer has the latest firmware. Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause recognition issues. You can check for updates through the printer's control panel or via the HP website.
As for running the printer only on black ink, many printers have an option to disable color ink and only use black. You can usually set this through the printer's settings on your computer:
- Open Devices and Printers (on Windows) or Printers & Scanners (on macOS).
- Right-click on the printer, select Printing Preferences.
- In the preferences window, look for an option like "Print in grayscale" or "Black & White Only."
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
