Hi @Carl223,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are getting a wide black line appearing on copies made by your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw could be due to several issues. Here are some common causes and troubleshooting steps:
Common Causes
- Dirty Scanner Glass: Debris, dust, or smudges on the scanner glass can cause black lines on copies.
- Defective Drum Unit or Toner Cartridge: A problem with the drum unit or toner cartridge can also produce lines.
- Fuser Unit Issue: The fuser unit might have accumulated toner or could be damaged.
- Firmware or Software Glitch: An outdated or corrupted firmware might cause printing and copying issues.
Troubleshooting Steps
1. Clean the Scanner Glass
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the scanner lid.
- Clean the scanner glass and the small strip of glass (if applicable) with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water or glass cleaner. Avoid using harsh chemicals.
- Dry the glass thoroughly before closing the lid.
- Plug in and turn on the printer to check if the issue persists.
2. Inspect and Clean the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) Glass
- If you're using the ADF, open it and clean the ADF glass as well.
- Make sure there are no tiny specks or smudges.
3. Check the Drum Unit and Toner Cartridges
- Open the printer's front cover and carefully remove the toner cartridges and the drum unit.
- Inspect the drum for any damage or excessive toner buildup.
- Clean the drum with a soft, lint-free cloth if necessary.
- Reinstall the drum unit and toner cartridges and run a test copy.
4. Inspect the Fuser Unit
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the back cover to access the fuser unit.
- Check for any toner buildup or damage on the fuser rollers.
- If there is toner buildup, clean the fuser with a soft, dry cloth. Be cautious as the fuser can be hot.
- If the fuser is damaged, consider replacing it.
5. Update the Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Visit the HP support website and download the latest firmware for your printer model.
- Follow the instructions to update the firmware.
6. Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Wait for a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- Perform a test copy to see if the issue is resolved.
