incompatible ink cartridge - HP ENVY 4500

I have an HP ENVY 4500 printer. I tried to replace the balack ink cartridge with the recommended HP cartridge, but get the message that this is incompatible. I've tried all the suggestions from the virtual assistant, but none have worked. The cartridge was purchased from Amazon, but is outside the 30 day period, so I'm directed to the manufacturer, but can't seem to reach anyone on-line or find an email address - suggestions please?
