My HP 3830 OfficeJet printer has worked well until I replaced the print cartridges with new HP 63 tricolor and 63XL black cartridges. Now I'm constantly receiving the "incompatible" cartridge message, although it has occasionally printed a single page with no apparent problem. Please advise!

Hi @Madcust75454,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "incompatible cartridge" message on your HP 3830 OfficeJet printer after installing new HP 63 tricolor and 63XL black cartridges can be frustrating, especially since these cartridges should be compatible with your printer. Here are several steps you can try to resolve this issue:

Check the Cartridges:

  • Ensure the cartridges are indeed HP 63 tricolor and 63XL black, which are compatible with the HP 3830.
  • Inspect the cartridges for any protective tape or covers that might not have been removed before installation.

Reinstall the Cartridges:

  • Remove the cartridges from the printer.
  • Check for any residual plastic or tape and ensure the contacts and nozzles are clean.
  • Reinsert them carefully, making sure they are securely and correctly installed in their appropriate slots.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Use a clean, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges and in the cartridge slots in the printer. Avoid touching the contacts with your fingers.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely before plugging the printer back in and turning it on.

Reset the Printer:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least a minute, then reconnect the power cord to the printer and the wall outlet. This can help clear any error states in the printer's memory.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Sometimes, updating the printer firmware can resolve cartridge recognition issues. You can check for firmware updates on the HP website or through the HP software on your computer.

Use Genuine HP Cartridges:

  • Confirm the cartridges are genuine HP cartridges. Sometimes, even new cartridges can be defective or mistakenly labeled. If possible, try another set of genuine cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
