I've been noticing this issue recently when i print, where on some pages a few lines are compressed or stretched as if the paper is moving through the printer at inconsistent speed. I'm also seeing some problems with coverage, which is highlighted especially here in the block at the top, which is supposed to be a single solid color.
Is there any troubleshooting I can do at home to address this, or do I need someone to come out & fix it?

Hi @brian190,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP LaserJet Pro M118dw—stretched/compressed text and inconsistent print coverage—may indicate mechanical or hardware problems, but there are troubleshooting steps you can try.
Troubleshooting Steps
Check Paper Quality and Type:
- Ensure you are using paper that meets the printer's specifications (check the manual for recommended weight and texture).
- Remove the paper from the tray and reload it to ensure proper alignment.
Clean the Printer Internals:
- Open the printer and inspect the inside for dust, debris, or residue on the rollers or print path.
- Use a clean, lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol (if needed) to gently clean the rollers.
Inspect and Clean the Fuser:
- The fuser might be causing the paper to move inconsistently, leading to stretching or compressing of text.
- If you are comfortable doing so, check the fuser for wear or debris, but avoid touching the hot surface directly.
Calibrate the Printer:
- Perform a print quality calibration:
- Access the printer’s menu via the control panel or printer driver settings on your macOS device.
- Look for a "Print Quality" or "Calibration" option and follow the instructions.
Replace the Toner Cartridge:
- If coverage issues persist, the toner cartridge may be faulty or running low.
- Replace the cartridge with a genuine HP cartridge and print a test page.
Update the Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure your printer's firmware is up-to-date.
- Download the latest firmware update for your printer model from the HP website and install it via USB or wireless connection.
Test Print Without External Factors:
- Try printing a test page or a built-in diagnostic page directly from the printer menu. This will help determine if the issue is hardware-related or caused by a software/driver problem.
Reset the Printer:
- Reset the printer to factory defaults:
- Navigate to the "Settings" or "Setup" menu.
- Select "Restore Factory Settings" or a similar option.

I hope this helps.
