Hi @ja3409,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet 5258 All-in-One Printer is displaying an error that the ink cartridge is not communicating with the printer, here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Check Cartridge Compatibility

Ensure the cartridges are compatible with the HP OfficeJet 5258. It uses HP 63 or HP 63XL ink cartridges. If you are using non-genuine cartridges, they might not work correctly.

Step 2: Reseat the Ink Cartridges

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Open the cartridge access door and wait until the carriage stops moving.
  3. Remove the ink cartridges.
  4. Check for any protective plastic tape on the contacts (do not touch the contacts).
  5. Reinsert the cartridges firmly into their slots.
  6. Close the cartridge access door.

Step 3: Clean the Cartridge Contacts

Sometimes, dirt or residue can prevent communication.

  1. Power off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  2. Remove the cartridges.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts in the printer.
  4. Allow everything to dry completely.
  5. Reinsert the cartridges and power on the printer.

Step 4: Update the Printer FirmwareUpdate the firmware on an HP printer

Outdated firmware can cause cartridge recognition issues.

  1. Go to the HP Customer Support website.
  2. Download and install the latest firmware update for the OfficeJet 5258.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to update the printer.

Step 5: Reset the Printer

  1. Turn the printer on.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.

Step 6: Test with Another Cartridge

If you have another compatible cartridge, test with it. If the issue is resolved, the original cartridge may be defective.

Step 7: Check for Printer Errors

  1. If the issue persists, check if the printer's control panel displays additional error codes or messages.
  2. Refer to the printer's user manual for troubleshooting specific error codes.

Refer to this document: HP printer ink cartridge issues including 'Incompatible,' 'Missing,' 'Failure' and enrollment errors

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
