Hi @ja3409,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet 5258 All-in-One Printer is displaying an error that the ink cartridge is not communicating with the printer, here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:
Step 1: Check Cartridge Compatibility
Ensure the cartridges are compatible with the HP OfficeJet 5258. It uses HP 63 or HP 63XL ink cartridges. If you are using non-genuine cartridges, they might not work correctly.
Step 2: Reseat the Ink Cartridges
- Turn on the printer.
- Open the cartridge access door and wait until the carriage stops moving.
- Remove the ink cartridges.
- Check for any protective plastic tape on the contacts (do not touch the contacts).
- Reinsert the cartridges firmly into their slots.
- Close the cartridge access door.
Step 3: Clean the Cartridge Contacts
Sometimes, dirt or residue can prevent communication.
- Power off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
- Remove the cartridges.
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts in the printer.
- Allow everything to dry completely.
- Reinsert the cartridges and power on the printer.
Step 4: Update the Printer FirmwareUpdate the firmware on an HP printer
Outdated firmware can cause cartridge recognition issues.
- Go to the HP Customer Support website.
- Download and install the latest firmware update for the OfficeJet 5258.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to update the printer.
Step 5: Reset the Printer
- Turn the printer on.
- Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.
Step 6: Test with Another Cartridge
If you have another compatible cartridge, test with it. If the issue is resolved, the original cartridge may be defective.
Step 7: Check for Printer Errors
- If the issue persists, check if the printer's control panel displays additional error codes or messages.
- Refer to the printer's user manual for troubleshooting specific error codes.
Refer to this document: HP printer ink cartridge issues including 'Incompatible,' 'Missing,' 'Failure' and enrollment errors
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
