HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer

My printer is not reading the ink cartridges. I replaced the black ink cartridge and it says that there is a supply system problem. I tried taking out the cartridge and putting it back in. I took a brand new one and it says the same error message. I took the old cartridge and the same message came up. I removed all the inks and the print head and looked at the prongs and they are all good, none are bent. What can I do or the printer is broken?

Hi @busimomandstaff

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining everything so clearly—and I’m genuinely sorry you’re facing this. When your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 refuses to recognize cartridges despite careful replacement and inspection, it’s more than frustrating—it feels like the printer is holding your work hostage.

Let’s walk through a structured recovery process that targets both ink system detection and firmware-level faults.

Step-by-Step Recovery for “Supply System Problem” on HP OfficeJet Pro 8710

1. Power Reset the Printer

This clears temporary memory glitches that may misread cartridge status.

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the wall and wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power it on.

Watch for any change in the error message during startup.

2. Clean Cartridge and Printhead Contacts

Even if the prongs look fine, residue can block electrical signals.

  • Remove all cartridges.
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Gently clean the copper contacts on:
    • Each cartridge
    • The printhead connector inside the printer
  • Let everything dry completely before reinserting.

3. Try a Different Genuine HP Cartridge

Even new cartridges can have faulty chips or seals.

  • If available, test with a second HP 952 or 952XL Black cartridge.
  • Avoid refilled or third-party cartridges during troubleshooting.

4. Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can miscommunicate with newer cartridges or block detection.

5. Run HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool

This tool automatically scans and resolves common cartridge and connection issues.

  • Open the HP Smart app.
  • Go to Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • Let it complete the scan and apply any recommended fixes.

You’ve already done everything right—let’s make sure your printer responds accordingly.
