My ENVY 4502 All-In-One Printer after years of use has begun giving me this error message: "The indicated cartridge is not intended for use in this printer."  I have installed both A 61 XL and a 61 cartridge with the same result

Hi @tdcernech,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP ENVY 4502 All-in-One Printer is showing “The indicated cartridge is not intended for use in this printer” even when using both HP 61 and 61XL cartridges. Let’s go through a few steps to resolve this.

Check Cartridge Compatibility

The HP ENVY 4502 only supports HP 61 and HP 61XL ink cartridges (Black and Tri-color).

Make sure the cartridges are genuine HP and not refilled or third-party. Non-HP cartridges can trigger this error.

Inspect the Cartridges

Remove both cartridges from the printer.

Check for protective plastic tape covering the copper contacts or ink nozzles (remove if still in place).

Inspect the copper contacts for dirt, fingerprints, or ink buildup.

Clean Electrical Contacts

Power off the printer and unplug it.

Gently clean the copper contacts on both the cartridges and the inside carriage using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.

Let dry completely before reinserting.

Reset the Printer

With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer and the wall outlet.

Wait 60 seconds.

Plug the cord directly into the wall outlet and reconnect to the printer.

Power the printer back on and check again.

Update Printer Firmware

From the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer.

Or connect the printer to your PC and install the latest firmware from HP’s support site.

Try Another Cartridge

If possible, test with another new, genuine HP 61/61XL cartridge. Sometimes a cartridge can be defective even if new.

I hope this helps.
