Hi @James5454554,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP OfficeJet 3830 is producing black ink that looks green after someone refilled it, and you’re not sure if it’s dry or contaminated. Let’s go through steps to troubleshoot and resolve this.

Check cartridge type

Confirm that the cartridge installed is HP 63 or HP 63XL, which is the compatible black cartridge for the OfficeJet 3830.

Using generic or incorrect cartridges can cause color issues like green or brown ink.

Remove and inspect the cartridge

Take the black cartridge out and check the ink label and expiration date.

If the ink was refilled with a third-party or incompatible ink, this could cause discoloration.

Clean the printhead

In HP Smart or Printer Toolbox, run the printhead cleaning utility.

This can remove dried or contaminated ink that may be mixing with black.

Run a test print

Print a printer status report or nozzle check to see if the color problem persists.

If black still looks green, the cartridge or printhead is likely contaminated.

Try a genuine HP cartridge

Replace the black cartridge with a new HP original cartridge.

This is the most reliable way to restore proper black printing.

Avoid mixing inks

Do not refill HP cartridges with third-party ink unless you are experienced; it can permanently damage the printhead and produce color issues.

Final check

After installing a new cartridge and running cleaning cycles, print a full page test to confirm the black ink is correct.

I hope this helps.
