Microsoft Windows 11

Hi,

after the update from windows 10 to windows 11 , the message "incompatible cartridge"  appears  when trying to print a document.

No cartridge changes occured on that printer which was working without problems with Windows 10.

What can I do ?

Hi @jos60,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

After upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11, it's not uncommon for HP printers to show "Incompatible Cartridge" errors even if the cartridges were working fine before. This is usually due to driver or firmware conflicts introduced during the OS upgrade.

1. Power Reset the Printer

  • Turn on the printer.
  • With the printer on, unplug the power cable from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

2. Uninstall and Reinstall the Printer Software

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
  • Uninstall all HP printer-related software.
  • Restart your PC.
  • Download and install the latest drivers from 123.hp.com or your printer’s Official HP® Support

3. Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit the Official HP® Support
  • Download the latest firmware for your printer model.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to update.

4. Clean Cartridge Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Gently remove the cartridges.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the copper contacts.
  • Let them dry and reinstall.

5. Disable Cartridge Protection (if applicable)

  • Open the HP Smart App or Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  • Navigate to Settings > Cartridge Protection.
  • Turn off Cartridge Protection and save changes.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
