How do I fix my printer if I keep getting an error message that I must remove and replace the cartridges but after doing so countless times I am still getting the same error message?

HP Officejet 4650 series.

I keep putting in the serial numbrer on the back of the printer and I keep getting a message that it is not valid. Checked it several times and that is the correct and only number that I have!

Hi  @ANGELDON

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I Understand your concern of repeatedly seeing the "remove and replace cartridge" error even after reinstalling the cartridges multiple times, don’t worry let me help you with this.

Could you kindly confirm the below details:

  1. Kindly confirm if your using genuine HP ink cartridges or third-party/refilled cartridges?
  2. Which cartridge is being reported in the error message (black, tri-color, or both)?
  3. Did the issue start after installing new cartridges, or did it suddenly begin with cartridges that were previously working?
  4. What is the exact error message displayed on the printer or HP Smart app?

In the meantime, Kindly try the below steps and confirm :

  1. Remove and Reseat the Cartridges
    Turn the printer on.
    Open the cartridge access door.
    Remove both cartridges.
Inspect them for any protective tape that may still be attached.
Reinstall them firmly until they click into place.
  2. Clean the Cartridge Contacts
Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
    Carefully remove the cartridges.
Using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water, gently clean the copper-colored electrical contacts on the cartridges.
Allow everything to dry completely before reinstalling.
  3. Check the Cartridges Individually
Install only the black cartridge and check if the error changes.
Then test only the tri-color cartridge.
This may help identify if a specific cartridge is causing the problem.

If the printer continues to display the same error after completing the above steps, the issue could be related to a defective cartridge or the printer's cartridge carriage contacts.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
