Hi @AndyK1968,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To resolve the issue of your HP 5200 printer not printing black and producing incorrect colors, follow these steps.
Check Ink Levels
- Ensure that all ink cartridges have sufficient ink. Replace any empty or low ink cartridges.
Clean the Printhead
- Use the printer's maintenance tools to clean the printhead. This can often resolve issues with missing or incorrect colors.
- On your printer's control panel, navigate to the maintenance or tools menu.
- Select "Clean Printhead" or a similar option.
Align the Printhead
- Printhead misalignment can cause color issues. Align the printhead using the printer’s maintenance tools.
- On the printer's control panel, navigate to the maintenance or tools menu.
- Select "Align Printhead" or a similar option.
Check the Paper Type and Print Settings
- Ensure that you are using the correct paper type and print settings.
- On your computer, open the print dialog.
- Select the correct paper type and quality settings.
Perform a Printer Reset
- Reset the printer to clear any potential errors.
- Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
- Wait for about 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.
Update Printer Firmware and Drivers
- Make sure the printer’s firmware and drivers are up to date.
- Visit the HP Support website and download the latest firmware and drivers for your printer model.
Check for Blocked Nozzles
- Sometimes, the nozzles can get blocked. You can manually clean the printhead nozzles using a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the printer to access the printhead.
- Gently wipe the nozzles with a lint-free cloth moistened with distilled water.

Run a Print Quality Diagnostic Report
- This report can help identify the problem.
- On the printer's control panel, navigate to the maintenance or tools menu.
- Select "Print Quality Diagnostic Report" or a similar option.
Replace the Printhead
- If the printhead is damaged or worn out, you may need to replace it. Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to replace the printhead.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
