HP ENVY 4502 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

my hp envy 4502 is saying that my black ink cartridge is incompatible or doesn't support it. Even if I try a non hp cartridge it says the same thing. Color is fine. But the black cartridges are not recognized and so it goes into single cartridge mode. I've tried several hp cartridges and some non hp cartrdges, same thing,  Not compatible.

Hi @ppntr2346,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for reaching out. I understand how frustrating it can be when your HP ENVY 4502 reports that the black ink cartridge is incompatible, especially after trying both genuine HP and non-HP cartridges.

This issue is often related to cartridge recognition errorsfirmware compatibility, or cartridge region lock. Here are a few steps to help resolve it:

1. Use Genuine HP 61 or 61XL Black Cartridges

  • The HP ENVY 4502 supports only HP 61/61XL cartridges.
  • Ensure the cartridge is genuine and not expired or previously used in another printer.

2. Clean Cartridge Contacts

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the black cartridge.
  • Gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Let it dry completely before reinserting.

3. Reset the Printer

  • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power it on.

4. Update Printer Firmware

5. Try a Different Genuine Cartridge

  • If possible, test with a new, unopened HP 61 black cartridge.
  • Sometimes, even new cartridges can be defective or previously activated in another printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
