HP Recommended

hp office jet pro 6978    does not print black - have tried all possible fixes provided by hp virtual assistant to no avail.

The troubleshooting steps in the document here may help resolve black not printing on your HP Officejet 6978.  If you have gone through the steps in that document without success then I would suggest cleaning the printhead as shown in the video here (I would suggest unplugging the printer's power cord after removing the cartridges somewhere around time 1:40 to prevent unexpected movements from the printhead):
