The printer HP Officejet Pro  8600 ran well until I had to replace an empty cartridge (951  Cyan) by a new one. This cartridge had first not be recognised, later the printer told it empty and alos the device  told black (950) and yellow (951)  as empty, too although they aren´t  empty. magenta (951) was told full.

What to do to reactivate the printer?

Hi @solveproblems15,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're describing with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 is fairly common when replacing ink cartridges, and it can usually be resolved with a few troubleshooting steps. Here are some suggestions to help get your printer back to normal.

Power Cycle with Cartridge Reinsert:

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect it from the power source.
  • Open the printer's cartridge access door and carefully remove all cartridges.
  • Wait for about 5 minutes before reconnecting the printer.
  • Insert each cartridge back in place, ensuring they click securely.

Clean Ink Cartridge Contacts:

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove each cartridge and gently clean the contacts (the small gold or copper-colored parts) on both the cartridges and the printhead.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to avoid damaging the contacts.
  • Let everything dry completely, then reinsert the cartridges and power on the printer.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Outdated firmware can sometimes cause cartridge recognition issues.
  • Go to HP’s support website, download the latest firmware for your printer model, and install it if it’s out of date.

Reset the Printer:

  • With the printer powered on, unplug it from the wall outlet without turning it off.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • This soft reset can clear up minor issues.

Run a Printhead Cleaning Cycle:

  • In the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Tools > Clean Printhead.
  • This can help resolve issues if there’s a clog or ink system problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
