@DonDickinson, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding New Black Ink Cartridge Not Reading Issue on HP OfficeJet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
If your HP OfficeJet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer is not recognizing a new black ink cartridge, follow these steps to troubleshoot the issue:
Step 1: Verify the Ink Cartridge
- Use Genuine HP Cartridges: Ensure you are using genuine HP ink cartridges. Non-HP cartridges might not be recognized correctly.
- Check Compatibility: Make sure the ink cartridge is compatible with your HP OfficeJet 5740 printer. Recommended cartridges include:
- HP 62 Black Ink Cartridge (~200 pages)
- HP 62XL Black Ink Cartridge (~600 pages)
Step 2: Install the Ink Cartridge Correctly
- Turn on the Printer: Ensure the printer is powered on.
- Load Paper: Load plain white paper into the input tray.
- Open Cartridge Access Door: Open the cartridge access door by placing two fingers under one or both of the small handles on the sides of the door and lifting it up.
- Remove Cartridge: Lightly press down on the ink cartridge you want to replace and pull it out towards you to remove it.
- Handle New Cartridge: Remove the new cartridge from its package. Be careful to touch only the black plastic on the cartridge. Pull the orange tab to remove the protective tape.
- Note: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles.
- Insert New Cartridge: Slide the new cartridge into the empty slot at a slight upward angle, then gently push up until it snaps into place.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!
