Hi @Winston1428

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it is when a new cartridge refuses to work—especially when you expect a smooth installation.

Let's go through some detailed troubleshooting steps to get your HP LaserJet MFP M234dwe printer working properly.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting for a New Cartridge Not Working

Step 1: Check Cartridge Compatibility

  • Ensure that the cartridge is genuine HP toner and compatible with your printer model.
  • The correct cartridge for your printer should be HP 134A or HP 134X toner.
  • If you’re using a third-party or refilled cartridge, it may not be recognized by the printer.

Step 2: Remove and Reinstall the Cartridge

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the toner access door and carefully remove the cartridge.
  3. Check for any protective tape or packaging that may still be attached.
  4. Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.
  5. Close the toner access door and turn the printer back on.

Step 3: Clean the Cartridge Chip and Contacts

  • The cartridge has a memory chip that communicates with the printer.
  • Use a dry, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the chip and the printer’s contact points.
  • Avoid using liquids, as they can damage the components.

Step 4: Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it for 5 minutes.
  2. Plug it back in and turn it on.
  3. Try printing a test page to see if the issue is resolved.

Step 5: Update Printer Firmware

Step 6: Check for Error Messages

  • If you see Error Code 11, it may indicate that the printer cannot read the cartridge memory.
  • If this happens, try reinstalling the cartridge or replacing it with another genuine HP toner.
