Hi @tex07,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that your HP ENVY 7640 printer is printing without any ink appearing on the paper, and cleaning the cartridges hasn't resolved the issue,I would request you to please follow the steps:

Verify Cartridges

  • The Envy 7640 requires HP 62 or HP 62XL cartridges.
  • Make sure you’re using genuine HP cartridges. Third‑party or refilled ones often fail after firmware updates.
  • Check that the protective tape on new cartridges has been fully removed.

Run Printhead Cleaning Utility

  • On the printer’s touchscreen:
  • Go to Setup → Tools → Clean Printhead.
  • Run the cleaning cycle up to 3 times.
  • Print a test page after each cycle.
  • If still blank, proceed to deeper cleaning.

Update Firmware

  • Go to HP Support → Drivers & Downloads → HP Envy 7640.
  • Install the latest firmware update.
  • This ensures cartridge recognition and fixes false “empty ink” errors.

Try a Hard Reset

  • Power off the printer.
  • Unplug for 60 seconds.
  • Plug back in and restart.
  • This clears memory errors.

Run Diagnostic Report:

  • You can print a Print Quality Diagnostic Report to evaluate the print quality. Load plain paper, touch the Setup icon on the control panel, select Reports, and then select Print Quality Report.

Take care and have an amazing day!
