@rickinFLA, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Check the Cartridge for Protective Tape

Sometimes, when you get a new ink cartridge, there's a small piece of protective tape that covers the ink nozzle. Even if the cartridge looks brand new, make sure that the tape (or plastic cover) has been fully removed from the cartridge.

Reset the Printer

A reset might help the printer recognize the new cartridges. Try this:

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall for about 30 seconds.

While it’s unplugged, take out the new cartridges and gently wipe the contacts (the copper-colored strip) with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Reinstall the cartridges and see if it recognizes them now.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts

If the cartridge contacts are dirty or have some kind of obstruction, the printer may not be able to communicate with it properly. You can clean both the cartridge and the printer's contact points with a soft cloth or cotton swab dampened with a little bit of water. Make sure everything is dry before reinserting the cartridges.

Ensure Cartridges Are Installed Correctly

Double-check that the cartridges are installed properly. The color cartridge (usually the tri-color one) might need to be in the correct slot, depending on your printer model. Try reseating it to ensure it clicks into place securely.

Try Reinstalling Printer Drivers

The communication error might also be related to the software side. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer drivers on your computer, and reconnect the printer afterward.

Run HP Smart:

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
