What is the workaround if my 6978 says that it can't use a cartridge with non-hp chips?

@benwray1,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

To bypass the "Non-HP Chip Detected" error on an HP OfficeJet Pro 6978, you must disable HP's cartridge restriction features or refresh the printer's hardware recognition system. This message is triggered by HP's built-in "Dynamic Security" firmware, which actively blocks third-party ink cartridges that do not use an original HP electronic chip.

Implement the following workarounds to resolve the issue:

1. Disable HP Cartridge Protection & Policy:

You can disable the software locks directly through the printer's touchscreen control panel:

  1. On your printer's screen, go to the Setup menu.
  2. Select System Setup, then choose Supply Settings.
  3. Locate Cartridge Policy and change it to Off.
  4. Locate Cartridge Protection and change it to Off.

Alternatively, you can access these settings by typing your printer’s local IP address into a computer's web browser to load the Embedded Web Server (EWS). Navigate to the Settings tab and turn off HP Cartridge Protection there.

2. Perform a Hard Hardware Reset:

If changing the software settings does not immediately clear the error, force the printer to clear its temporary memory and re-scan the cartridge chips:

  1. Remove all ink cartridges from the carriage.
  2. While the printer is still turned on, unplug the power cord directly from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain any residual electrical charge.
  4. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into a direct wall outlet (avoid surge protectors or extension cords, as they can cause voltage drops that interfere with chip reading).
  6. Turn the printer back on, wait for it to stop making noise, and reinsert the third-party cartridges.

3. Clean the Metal Contact Chips:

Sometimes the firmware throws a generic "Non-HP Chip" block error if it simply cannot read the third-party chip due to a bad physical connection:

  1. Remove the blocked cartridges.
  2. Locate the small gold metal contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer carriage slot.
  3. Gently wipe the contacts using a dry, lint-free cloth or a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol to remove any ink residue or oils.
  4. Allow them to dry completely before snapping them firmly back into place.

4. Turn Off Automatic Firmware Updates:

Once you successfully get your third-party ink working, prevent future lockouts:

  1. Open the printer's Setup menu.
  2. Choose Printer Maintenance or Update Settings.
  3. Select Printer Update Options and change it to Do Not Check for Updates.

Kind Regards,
