officejet 6700 premium printer

Someone gave me an officejet 6700 premium printer. My question is do I need to have all the cartridges installed to use this printer or can I just put in the  the black if I do not need to print in color.

Also I do not know if the person had subscribed to instant ink and I cannot find out. Can I just buy cartridges and will they work.
