Hi @Sarahwon,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet 6978 is not printing black ink despite having new cartridges and performing diagnostics, you can try the following steps to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Check the Black Ink Cartridge

Ensure Proper Installation:

  • Make sure the black ink cartridge is properly installed and seated correctly in its slot.

Check Ink Levels:

  • Verify that the black ink cartridge is not empty. Even new cartridges can sometimes be defective or improperly filled.

Use Genuine HP Cartridges:

  • Ensure you are using genuine HP ink cartridges. Third-party cartridges can sometimes cause issues.

Step 2: Clean the Printhead

Use Printer’s Cleaning Function:

  • Access the printer’s control panel.
  • Navigate to the Setup menu, then select Printer Maintenance.
  • Choose Clean Printhead or Clean Cartridges. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Manual Cleaning:

  • If the automatic cleaning doesn’t work, you can try manually cleaning the printhead. Remove the printhead and clean the nozzles gently with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water. Let it dry before reinstalling.

Step 3: Align the Printhead

  1. Align Printhead:
    • From the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup, then Printer Maintenance.
    • Select Align Printhead and follow the instructions.

Step 4: Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Reset the Printer:
    • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.Wait for 60 seconds.
    • Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet and then to the printer.Turn the printer back on and check if the issue persists.

Step 5: Update Printer Firmware

  1. Check for Firmware Updates:
    • Go to the HP Support website and check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model.
    • Download and install any available updates.

Step 6: Check Printer Settings

Print Quality Settings:

  • From your computer, open the print dialog box when you print a document.
  • Ensure that the print quality is set to Normal or Best, and not Draft.

Paper Type Settings:

  • Ensure the printer’s settings match the type of paper you are using.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
