Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi guys,

I have an HP 1010 Laserjet printer. Until recently it has been working ok, although the print was slightly dull (grey) it was clean and paper was white without any signs of lines or streaks etc.

Just two days ago, it started to print the same type of quality BUT with the addition of the paper being GREY ...

I have replaced the toner cartridge with a new one, but same results.

is this a know fault , and is there an easy way to fix it please?

Really would appreciate a quick response, as I have a lot of printing to do.

regards

AM

Hi @AMprinter,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Poor printing quality from an HP LaserJet 1010 printer can be caused by several factors. Here are some common troubleshooting steps to help you improve the printing quality.

  • Toner Level: Check the toner level in the printer. If the toner is running low, it can result in faded or light prints. Replace the toner cartridge if necessary.
  • Toner Cartridge Issues: Ensure that the toner cartridge is properly installed and seated in the printer. Sometimes, improper installation can lead to poor print quality.
  • Print Density Settings: Check the printer's settings, specifically the print density or darkness settings. Adjust these settings to get the desired print quality. If the print density is set too low, it can result in light or faded prints.
  • Cleaning the Printer: Dust and debris can accumulate inside the printer, affecting print quality. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to gently clean the exterior and interior of the printer, including the paper path and rollers. Be careful not to damage any components.
  • Cleaning the Drum: The imaging drum can accumulate toner residue over time, leading to poor print quality. If your printer has a separate drum unit, follow the manufacturer's instructions to remove and clean it properly. Do not expose the drum to direct light for an extended period.
  • Quality of Paper: Use high-quality paper that is recommended for laser printers. Low-quality or incompatible paper can cause smudging, bleeding, or other print issues.
  • Printer Drivers: Ensure that you have the correct and up-to-date printer drivers installed on your computer. Outdated or incorrect drivers can lead to printing problems.
  • Firmware Update: Check if there's a firmware update available for your printer model. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve compatibility issues and improve overall performance.
  • Page Settings: Make sure that the paper size and type settings in both the printer settings and the print job settings on your computer match the actual paper loaded in the tray.
  • Calibration and Alignment: Some printers have calibration and alignment processes that can be performed to improve print quality. Consult your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform these procedures.
  • Worn Components: If your printer is old or heavily used, components like the imaging drum or fuser unit might be worn out.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden..

Thanks for the comprehensive response.

To try and narrow down on your answers,

Heres my feedback,

Original problem, the printed paper has acceptable quality text, but the whole page is also grey.

Originally I did try a new cartridge,  with no noticeable effect on the print quality.

Attempted to do as much cleaning as possible without dismantling the print rollers etc.

No improvement.

As I was using the same printer BEFORE on a Win10 pc with basic drivers, the printing had always been OK.

Now you suggest making adjustments to various menu settings,, but I don't have access to these additional menu functions.

So, I'm at a point whether to fully open the machine and attempt to properly clean the rollers and print drum , or try more e ternary remedies as you suggested above.

In which case I need to have access to the Full proper drivers to rum on Win10.

Per chance anyone can direct me to a link which provides compatability drivers?

Thank you thus far.

Regards.
