@TreasurerMarty, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is producing lines on printed copies or scanned copies (Xeroxed copies), and you have already performed printer maintenance and printhead cleaning, try the following steps:
For Print Issues (Lines on Printed Copies)
- Run Additional Printhead Cleanings
- If you've only done it once, try up to three cleaning cycles via the printer menu:
Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead - Check if the issue improves after each cleaning.
- If you've only done it once, try up to three cleaning cycles via the printer menu:
- Print a Print Quality Report
- Navigate to Setup > Reports > Print Quality Report.
- If streaks appear on the color blocks, your printhead might be clogged.
- Check and Replace Ink Cartridges
- Use only genuine HP ink.
- Ensure cartridges are properly installed and have sufficient ink.
- Try replacing any low or faulty cartridges.
- Align the Printhead
- Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Align Printhead.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Manually Clean the Printhead
- Remove the ink cartridges and gently clean the printhead with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
- Dry it completely before reinserting.
For Scan/Copy Issues (Lines on Xeroxed Copies)
- Clean the Scanner Glass and ADF Strip
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with glass cleaner to clean:
- The flatbed scanner glass.
- The white backing under the scanner lid.
- The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) glass strip (narrow strip next to the main glass).
- Dry it completely before use.
- Check for Dust or Debris in the ADF
- Open the ADF cover and remove any stuck paper or dust.
- Roll a dry lint-free cloth along the rollers.
- Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer, unplug it for 2 minutes, then restart it.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
